↗ Resources

This section features a selection of tools and links that I have personally used during real investigations.
Reliable and well-tested resources, employed to identify individuals, locate places, and reconstruct complex situations.
They have played a key role in efforts to combat organized crime, in the hunt for fugitives, in the search for missing persons, and in the investigation of fraud.
Each item in this collection can represent a valuable piece of the puzzle, capable of opening new investigative leads and leading to further discoveries through targeted research.

WIGLE.NET - Wi-Fi, Tower Cell, BT Location

https://wigle.net/ is a free service that aggregates and organizes geolocalized data relating to wireless networks and radio devices collected from users around the world. The database is powered by the community of wardrivers, researchers, networking enthusiasts, and OSInt specialists, who contribute by uploading information obtained during their scans.

Collected data includes:

  • SSID (network name)
  • BSSID (MAC address of the access point)
  • Encryption type
  • GPS coordinates
  • Timestamp of detection
  • Identifiers of detected Bluetooth devices

The portal allows you to explore this information through a global interactive map and advanced search functions.

OSInt Uses of WiGLE

1. Geolocalization of a MAC address

By providing the MAC address (BSSID) of an access point or Bluetooth device, WiGLE allows you to view the geographic location where it was detected. This is useful for identifying the physical presence of a target in a specific place.

2. Tracking mobile devices or vehicles

Many smartphones, tablets, IoT devices, and vehicles broadcast Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals. If intercepted, it is possible to check their diffusion on WiGLE to obtain coordinates of passage or stationary.

3.Environmental mapping and geographic profiling

By analyzing an area on WiGLE, it is possible to identify the density of Wi-Fi networks, the type of devices present (including Bluetooth beacons), and reconstruct an environmental scenario useful for OSInt assessments, such as the type of building, frequency of use, or the presence of people.

4.Temporal analysis

Since each collected data is associated with a timestamp, it is possible to reconstruct the presence or movement of a network/device over time, identifying repetitive patterns, hours of activity, or changes in location.

5.Investigation of Bluetooth devices

A distinctive element of WiGLE is the ability to also map Bluetooth devices, including advertising beacons, wearable devices, headsets, smart cars, and more. While not always precisely identifiable, these signals can provide additional clues for localization or correlation activities.

Practical example

An OSInt analysis on a social profile shows a mobile hotspot with a personalized SSID (e.g., "Marco's iPhone").This data can be searched on WiGLE to verify the geographic location where it was detected, cross-referencing the information with dates and times. If a pairable Bluetooth device (e.g., a smartwatch) is also detected, the investigation is enriched with further context.

Final considerations

WiGLE.net is a collaborative platform, based on voluntary data collection. Its effectiveness depends on the quantity and frequency of surveys: urban areas, for example, are often very well covered, while rural areas may be less well-mapped.

It is important to note that WiGLE does not display real-time data and does not allow direct access to network content: it is exclusively metadata (SSID, BSSID, location, encryption type, timestamp).

Conclusion

WiGLE.net is a powerful tool for those working in the OSInt field: it allows you to geolocate networks and devices, build maps of interest, and correlate spatial and temporal data precisely. The ability to map Bluetooth devices further expands the information potential.Used ethically and responsibly, WiGLE is a valuable resource for digital investigators, researchers, and real-world analysts.
